Trump vs CNN, Fox News starring Trump

When the media writes an article, they may choose to shape their language in a way that may influence a reader’s beliefs in one direction or another. In the many forms of bias, this particular case can form confirmation bias. Here, a reader may be led to read articles that overtly or subconsciously speak to the preconceptions that they may already have. The story I chose to cover for this assignment is the ongoing conflict between Donald Trump and the Republican National Convention. The two news sources covered are CNN and Fox News, for their tendency to have vastly differing themes in their writing.
Beginning with CNN. They are portraying the situation as a major disagreement between Trump and Reince Priebus. In their coverage, CNN is portraying the disagreement as a bitter argument directly between Trump and Priebus. To help support this narrative, the writers have included more tweets between the two as opposed to Fox News. They also have gone back to reference previous communication between them to show the evolution of the disagreement. CNN also included more about the actions of the Cruz campaign than Fox did.
Fox News, on the other hand, has decided to treat this event almost as a misunderstanding between the two people in question. Focusing more on the Trump campaign as a whole, instead of Trump the individual, Fox News portrays this event as poor planning of the campaign rather than the possibility of being mislead by the RNC. Fox News also did not include as much information on Cruz as CNN has.

Both CNN and Fox News are portraying a different theme surrounding Donald Trump. With CNN, we can be led to believe that Trump is beginning to lose support and is trying to find ways to make himself relevant as more primaries approach. To do this CNN, is showing Trump as angry and losing his faith in the Republican leadership. For Fox News, they seem to be arguing that Trump’s campaign has begun to stumble in an otherwise successful race. They argue this by showing the upcoming primaries and detailing what Trump’s campaign needs to do in order to win the upcoming votes.
