Lessons Learned

I have learned quite a few things from my experience in doing research. As a journalist sometimes I forget how much people actually want to talk about a certain topic, especially politics. In attending the events, people open up when they are asked if they can comment on a political candidate. When interviewing people I have learned how to ask different question to gather different perspectives that is great because it can turn my story around and make me write something new. It is great to see people’s different perspective because it feels like they are telling you their own story and they want you to put it out to the world.

The second lesson that I learned was to arrive early to events. I have caught a couple of lucky breaks especially in the Bernie Sanders rally in Morehouse (that’s another story), but in arriving early to events really helped me get a better view and access to people. Every other journalist is trying to arrive early at the events and interview the same people, or write the same story. So it is important to arrive early in order to get a better story or interviews.

This class has really made me a better journalist, especially with interviewing because it has opened my horizon with asking questions and has made break out of my shell to be more interactive with the people around me. It does help having such an amazing group that all want to work hard to be the best. I cannot give enough credit to this class or group that has taught me a ton so far.
